Chapter 15 Using the SNMP Agent

Introduction

The EAServer SNMP agent allows you to monitor and set EAServer attributes in SNMP compatible management tools as part of a larger network management solution. The agent also allows you to start, stop, restart, and refresh servers.

The SNMP agent connects to the local server, allowing you to monitor and manage the clusters and servers defined in the local repository.

Implementation details

EAServer's SNMP agent is implemented using Sun Microsystem's Java Dynamic Management Kit (JDMK). The JDMK provides several advantages as a platform for SNMP management:

• SNMP code based on a JDMK platform can be used with multiple vendors' management applications.
• The SNMP agent instrumentation and its agents are platform-independent.
• The JDMK supports legacy SNMP interfaces as well as JMX-enabled applications.

Individual agent functions are performed by registered MBeans, which are listed by domain when viewed in an Internet browser window. See "MBean View screen" for more information.
